Wi-Fi (Wireless Local Area Network)

Internet access via WLAN is available in almost all LMU buildings. All seminar rooms in Oettingenstraße, the library, and the cafeteria are equipped with access points (802.11b/g, some 802.11n).

You can use Wi-Fi at LMU either with the VPN client or via Eduroam. You can find more detailed instructions in the LRZ descriptions (see below).

Please note: There are no public data sockets for Internet access in Oettingenstraße. In the CIP pools, connecting notebooks to the power supply is not permitted!

Further information on Wi-Fi can be found on the LRZ website. If you encounter any problems, please contact the IT Helpdesk. However, the Helpdesk cannot install any software on your computer.

Connect to the Wi-Fi

Internet access is available in almost all LMU buildings using the following instructions.

Two networks are available in LMU buildings. BayernWLAN is intended for guests or occasional users, as no login details are required for this network. In addition, there is the eduroam network, which is recommended for regular users and requires personal LRZ login details.

BayernWLAN

Guests visiting the premises or occasional users should use BayernWLAN. To do so, simply connect to this Wi-Fi network via your system settings. As soon as you attempt to connect to BayernWLAN, you will be redirected to a website where you must agree to the terms and conditions in order to access the internet via the network.

eduroam

Regular users are advised to log in using their LRZ ID and password.

Always set up eduroam using eduroam® CAT. This tool automatically configures all necessary settings. You will need an internet connection, e.g., via a mobile network or @BayernWLAN, and a university user account.

Your eduroam username is always <LRZ ID>@eduroam.mwn.de, e.g., ab12xyz@eduroam.mwn.de. Do not confuse your username with your email address! The password is the same one you use for your email account.

1. Select "eduroam" as your Wi-Fi access point
2. Select "PWD" as the EAP method
3. The LRZ ID followed by @eduroam.mwn.de can be used as the identity, e.g., ab77cde@eduroam.mwn.de. Alternative identities for eduroam are described here: Which username for eduroam? Which username for eduroam?
4. Enter the password associated with the identity
5. Save

Remove old eduroam profile

If you have already installed an eduroam profile on your Apple device (e.g., because you have switched from one university to another), the old eduroam profile must be deleted before the new one is installed.
To do this, navigate to System Preferences → General → Profiles or VPN and Device Management and check whether an eduroam profile file is already installed. If so, click “Delete Profile.”
To be on the safe side, you should also remove (ignore) the eduroam Wi-Fi in the Wi-Fi settings. It will then be relearned the next time you search.

Install new eduroam profile

After downloading the eduroam profile, it must be installed. To do this, go to “Settings” → ‘General’ → “VPN and Device Management.” Tap on the eduroam configuration profile and select “Install.” Finally, you will be asked for your ID and password. Examples of the correct ID can be found at: Which username for eduroam?

  1. Open the website https://cat.eduroam.org on your device (For Apple, you must use the Safari browser.
  2. Download the eduroam® installation program from there.
  3. Select “Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU)” as the institution and, in the next step, select “eduroam-campus.lmu.de” as the user group and follow the instructions.

Error messages and solutions

Connection problems

  • It often helps to simply turn the Wi-Fi off and on again. Then reconnect to eduroam.
  • Ensure that you are using the correct username (<LRZ ID>@eduroam.mwn.de, e.g., ab12xyz@eduroam.mwn.de).
  • Is the password correct? It is the same one you use to log in to your email program.
  • With iPhones and iPads, the eduroam connection sometimes only works after several attempts.
  • If the problem persists, delete the eduroam profiles and reinstall eduroam using the CAT tool.
